Taupo is a popular tourist centre, particularly in the summer, as it offers panoramic views over the lake toward the volcanic mountains of Tongariro National Park to the south. State Highway 5 is the second shortest of New Zealand’s eight National Highways. It extends from State Highway 1 at Tirau on the plains of the Waikato River to State Highway 2 close to the Hawke coast at Bay View, 10 kilometres north of Napier. You can access this State Highway with little difficulty using your campervan when you are in Taupo and use it to connect with nearby settlements or even other State Highways such as 1 and 2.
State Highway 1 is the longest road in New Zealand and it is the only highway that runs along the entire length of both main islands. In total, the highway is 2047 kilometres long, which includes 1106 kilometres in the North Island and 941 kilometres in the South Island. This highway is made up of mainly dual carriageway and is a pleasant and scenic route to take. You’ll be able to visit all kinds of great places when you take this highway from Taupo.
The Thermal Explorer Highway covers a large portion of the upper North Island, and can take your campervan adventure from Taupo to Auckland, through the central plateau from Taupo, or to Napier on the sunny east coast.
All three of these highways run concurrently for 11 kilometres from Wairakei in the north, along Tongariro Street and Lake Terrace, to southern Taupo.
