State Highway 1 skirts the southwestern Whangarei Harbour, nearing the coast briefly at Ruakaka, before proceeding down to wind through the Brynderwyn Hills and then approaching the upper reaches of the Kaipara Harbour. The highway crosses into the Auckland Region and passes through Wellsford and Warkworth, again heading for the East Coast.

This huge highway is 2047 kilometres long; 1106 kilometres in the North Island and 941 kilometres in the South Island and for most of its length it is a two-lane single carriageway. There are sections of motorway in the vicinity of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin so you will be able to drive your motorhome to any of these other major cities from Auckland.

State Highway 2 is another long highway, connecting Auckland and Wellington via Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Napier and Hastings in Hawkes Bay. It crosses State Highway 1 just north of Pokeno, 49 kilometres south of central Auckland so whilst you may have to travel a little before reaching it, this won’t be a problem in a motorhome rental from My Campervan. The highway crosses the Hauraki Plains before running the length of the Karangahake Gorge with a break in the hills between the Coromandel Peninsula and Kaimai Ranges.

State Highway 3 serves the West Coast of the country’s North Island and forms a link between State Highway 1 and State Highway 2. The highway has one spur, called State Highway 3A. This is a 15.6 kilometre stretch that links State Highway 3 to the west of Waitara with Inglewood and provides a shortcut to New Plymouth. One of the highway’s junctions passes through Auckland so you will be able to easily join it in the city.
